What if I have no prior experience with electrical construction?

  • This is no problem!  Most of our apprentices start their electrical career with very little or no experience.  Apprenticeship programs are designed to provide all the training and experience you need to become a well-rounded journey-level worker in the future.  

What is the minimum age to apply?

  • You may apply and qualify for the interview when you are 17 years of age.  However, you cannot be selected for the apprenticeship until you are 18 years of age. 

Do I need a driver's license to apply?

  • To qualify for the interview, you must have a valid driver's license.

What prior education do I need to qualify?

  • To qualify for the interview, you must have a High School Diploma, a High School Equivalency Diploma (HiSET), a General Education Diploma (GED), or a letter from a high school counselor stating you are on track to graduate at the end of the current school year. 
  • To qualify for the interview, you must have completed a year of Algebra I or Algebra II, at any level, and received a grade of  "C" or higher. 

 Is there any possibility of waiving the qualification requirements?

  • Yes, these are the "standard entry" qualification requirements.  If you have served in the military, worked in the electrical industry, completed a pre-apprenticeship program, been organized into the union, work for an employer that has been organized into the union, or taken specific coursework through the electrical Training Alliance, then you may qualify through other methods.  These other methods of qualification are explained in more detail here.

Can I apply with a prior criminal record?

  • Yes, anyone can apply and qualify for the electrical apprenticeship program with a criminal record. 
  • However, depending on your criminal record, there may be specific projects, job sites, or employers that you would not be allowed to work on or with.  

When do you accept applications?

  • We accept applications year-round.

Is the application completed online, in-person, or both?


What documents will I need to submit after I apply? 

  • You will need to send us a copy of your valid driver’s license.
  • You will need to have your former school send us an official copy of your high school transcripts.
  • And, you will need to provide evidence of your High School Diploma, a High School Equivalency Diploma (HiSET), a General Education Diploma (GED), or a letter from a high school counselor stating you are on track to graduate at the end of the current school year. 

Is there an application fee?

  • Yes, there is an application processing fee of $25.00

What is the first step I should take to get started?

  • The first step towards becoming an apprentice is to complete the application request form located on the Des Moines Electrical Apprenticeship Website.

What will happen after I apply and qualify for the apprenticeship interview?

  • After you have submitted your application and your qualification documents, you will be scheduled for the electrical aptitude test.  

When can applicants expect to hear back after applying? 

  • You should, typically, expect to hear back from us within 48 hours.  
  • You will receive an email with additional information about the next steps.
  • If you do not hear from us within 48 hours, be sure to check your spam folder to confirm our response wasn't directed there.
  • If you still can't locate any additional information, please reach out to us by email

Is there an interview that follows the application?

  • After taking the aptitude test and receiving a passing score, you will be scheduled for the apprenticeship interview

Do you have an entry-level or helper program for interested applicants?

  • Yes, you can find employment as an entry-level "Construction Wireman" either before or after applying to Des Moines Electrical Apprenticeship.  
  • If you are interested in getting started as a Construction Wireman, you can fill out the Employment Interest Form found on our website.
